How to Prune Bushes and Shrubs the Right Way

Shrubs and bushes serve an important role in landscaping. For example, they can be used as privacy hedges, backdrops, and focal points in the garden.

Like all plants, however, they require regular care. For one thing, you have to provide them with water, especially during their first year.

Pruning bushes is also important. Not only will that improve their appearance, but it’ll benefit their health as well.

Is that what you’re trying to do? Looking for a guide on how to prune bushes? If so, you’re at the right place. Keep reading for some landscaping tips!

Pruning Overgrown Shrubs and Bushes

Using a pair of hand shears, remove any old or dead stems from the shrub; this includes stems that have no growth or buds. Make sure to cut them off at a 45-degree angle so that water won’t collect on the surface.

Not only will that prevent decay, but it’ll also ensure proper healing of the plant tissue.

You also want to do hard pruning on the shrubs during winter or fall. Basically, it involves cutting back all stems so that the plant is just a few inches from the ground. That’ll help stimulate new growth so that it’ll be healthier in the spring.

Don’t have time to do it yourself? You can always hire a professional company (e.g. Tuxedoyardcare.com) to do it for you.

Pruning Young Shrubs and Bushes

Remove any long, unbranched stems from the shrub. Make sure that the cut is done at a 45-degree angle above the healthy buds on the branch. This will encourage the lower side branches to develop.

Alternatively, you can pinch off the dead buds with your fingers. That’ll encourage the plant to grow bushy and even.

Depending on the shrub, you may also want to shape it with a pair of shears; you can also use a pruning saw. Simply trim it so that it’s slightly wider at the top—that’ll help the plant produce new growth.

It’s also a good idea to cut out wayward branches. That’ll help reduce the bulk of the plant so that the middle section will receive more sunlight.

When Should You Trim Bushes and Shrubs?

Late winter or early spring (March or early April) is the best time to prune your shrubs. However, there are exceptions.

For one thing, you want to avoid pruning shrubs and bushes that bloom in the spring. You want to wait until after the blooms have faded before trimming.

Any broken or dead branches should also be removed as soon as possible. That’ll help prevent the spread of disease to other parts of the plant.
